This free paperback book mockup shows a trade paperback held up against a warm plaster wall, shot straight on so the cover art reads flat and undistorted. It’s one scene from a six-scene set I built for book cover, self-publishing and editorial work.
What’s inside the free paperback book mockup
One PSD, one smart object. Double-click the smart object layer, drop in your cover artwork, hit save, and it maps back onto the book with the paper stock, spine roll and the thumb’s shadow across the lower edge still reading through. The cover sits close to parallel with the camera, so straight-on layouts stay square — no keystone correction, no fighting a perspective transform to get your type sitting level.
The hand and the cast shadow are part of the base file, which means your artwork picks up the fold of the thumb over the front edge rather than floating on top of it.
Where it works
Book cover design presentations, self-publishing and KDP listings, author websites, publisher pitch decks, editorial and portfolio shots, and Instagram promos for a launch. The trade paperback proportions suit fiction and general non-fiction — it’s the shape most readers picture when they picture a book.
Shot this against plaster in hard directional light rather than a clean studio sweep, the book cover is mostly flat colour and type, and under soft light a paperback photographs like a rectangle of nothing. The hard shadow behind it separates the book from the wall and gives the whole frame some depth — and the texture in the plaster keeps a bright cover from looking like it was pasted onto grey card. If your cover is dark, brighten the shadow layer slightly before exporting; the contrast can become too heavy against the deeper end of the palette.
